3 Tips To Make Your Website Design More SEO-Friendly

More than having a visually appealing website design, it is more important to install a layout that is friendly to search engines. The rules of SEO have changed in the last few years. Although to some extent how your website looks and feels still matters, having a website that loads fast, has clean codes, is easy to navigate and displays content in a proportional and pleasant way is more beneficial to your business.

So you now have a functional website design plus good content. However, you are not sure whether you did your SEO correctly or if search engines will be able to index your website. Here are three tips to consider:

1. Customise Your Meta Tag

SEO-friendly website designs allow content publishers to customise their meta titles and descriptions to ensure they are unique and relevant and comply with SEO standards. Meta tags are texts embedded within a website’s HTML source code. These texts appear as description snippets and titles on search results.

However, web design not optimised for SEO do not provide custom meta tag options. Without proper meta tags, search engines are unable to understand what your page is about and which neighbourhood or category it belongs to. In lieu of a customised meta tag, search engines automatically index the first few lines of your content and they appear as snippets on search results instead.

Meta tags are like commands. Search engines crawl the text within these tags and assess whether they relate to your web content. They are also the best places to have keywords outside of the body of your web content.

Should you lack a functional CMS platform through which you can customise your meta tags, talk to your developer. They can change website meta tags by accessing the original HTML source code files.

2. Change Your URL Slugs

When it comes to on-page search engine optimisation, a slug is pretty useful. Slugs are pieces of text attached to your main domain. They mostly make use of keywords and give URLs a unique and SEO-friendly identity. Similar to meta tags and web content, slugs send signals to search engines which affect your rankings.

No two slugs under the same domain are alike. URLs with slugs direct users to a particular page on your website. Every web developer is encouraged to use slugs instead of automatically assigning numbers, letters or symbols for web pages.

Unfortunately not all CMS platforms allow you to customise your URL. Websites that use numbers, letters or symbols instead of keyword-rich slugs are less likely to be crawled by search engines.

Some CRM platforms do not allow you to change URLs. You have to make do with the link URL assigned to you. This is bad for SEO since search engines only index and process readable content. Symbols and numbers are not considered readable as they do not give crawlers an idea about your web content.

If your website has an outdated CMS, it is highly recommended that you change to an SEO-ready platform. If not, list down your preferred page slugs and then ask your web master to apply all the necessary changes.

Ideally, slugs should not contain stop words such as prepositions and conjunctions.

3. Avoid Dynamic URLs in Your Website Design

As mentioned above, search engines cannot associate symbols with the content on your website. But slugs are easy to understand even if search engines don’t thoroughly crawl the entire web content.

Dynamic URLs contain symbols such as ?, %, =, + or &. These URLs are generally considered not good for SEO. They are generated when a site runs a script or there’s a search query on a website database (e.g. WordPress media files). Unlike static URLs which contain content anchored to HTML codes, content on dynamic URLs comes from an external database. Whenever content on an external database changes, the URL changes as well. This means a single database file can generate hundreds to thousands of URLs.

There are ways to prevent your website from generating too many dynamic URLs. One way is to use a different file for every content you publish. Do not recycle pictures or documents. Just upload a new one under a different file name instead of embedding an existing file from your media database.
